OUR SUPPORT

Support shaped around real life.

People rarely arrive in supported accommodation with just one issue to address. Our support starts by understanding the individual and works around the areas that matter most to their circumstances.

How support works

Support follows a straightforward, repeatable path — not a fixed programme.

01Understand

We get to know the person's circumstances and strengths.

02Agree goals

Realistic, practical goals are set together.

03Take action

We work through agreed actions, step by step.

04Review progress

Goals and support are reviewed at agreed points.

05Prepare for move-on

We build towards the next suitable housing step.

PRACTICAL SUPPORT AREAS

Support is built around the practical things that help a resident move forward.

Benefits & Finances

Help residents understand correspondence, budgeting, appointments and where specialist advice may be needed. We aim to identify financial problems early and work constructively before they become more serious.

Housing & Independent Living

Understanding housing responsibilities, maintaining a room or home, developing routines, reporting repairs, managing appointments and preparing for more independent accommodation.

Mental Health & Wellbeing

Recognising factors that affect wellbeing, developing stable routines and encouraging engagement with health professionals. Open Home Living is not a clinical mental health service.

Substance Misuse & Recovery

We focus on reducing harm, maintaining safety and encouraging engagement with appropriate treatment and recovery services. Illegal drug use and drug dealing are not permitted in our accommodation.

Education & Training

Support residents to identify suitable courses, training, qualifications and skills development opportunities.

Employment & Volunteering

Help residents explore realistic routes into work, volunteering or work-readiness activity that improves confidence and readiness.

Tenancy Readiness

Help residents develop the practical skills needed to manage future accommodation responsibly.

Move-On Planning

Moving on is considered from the beginning — not suddenly at the end of a placement. The objective is sustainable progress, not simply moving someone somewhere else.

What a support plan looks like

A support plan keeps things specific and accountable. It is built with the resident and reviewed over time — not handed down as a fixed document. Residents are expected to participate in agreed support meetings and play an active part in their own plan.

A clear framework, not a template.

Current priorities

What matters most to the resident right now.

Agreed goals

Realistic goals set together and reviewed.

Practical actions

The specific steps that move towards each goal.

Responsibilities

Who does what — the resident and the support team.

Review points

Agreed times to check progress and adjust.

Longer-term housing goals

The direction of travel towards future housing.

Support should help people move forward.

The purpose of support is to help residents build greater confidence, stability and independence over time. Progress will look different for every person — what matters is that there is a direction.

What progress looks like

  • Taking more responsibility over time
  • Building stable everyday routines
  • Developing practical living skills
  • Engaging with opportunities and services
  • Preparing for future housing

What this is not

  • Doing everything for somebody
  • A fixed, one-size-fits-all programme
  • A replacement for clinical or specialist services
  • An indefinite arrangement with no move-on focus
  • Simply moving someone somewhere else

WORKING WITH OTHER SERVICES

Supported accommodation cannot provide every type of assistance.

Where appropriate, and with regard to information-sharing requirements, we help residents access and engage with relevant external services — we do not imply that Open Home Living directly provides healthcare, clinical services, legal advice or specialist financial advice.

Local authority housing services
Probation and criminal justice services
Mental health teams
GPs and NHS services
Drug and alcohol services
Social care
Homelessness services
Voluntary and community organisations
Employment, training and education providers

Move-on starts from the beginning.

Moving on should not suddenly become a conversation at the end of a placement. We encourage residents to think about future housing, independence and longer-term goals throughout their time with us. The appropriate next step will depend on the individual.
